British Insurance Law Association  

BILA is a unique organisation, its membership being drawn from Insurers, Insurance Brokers and other intermediaries, Academic Lawyers, Solicitors and Barristers. In addition to UK members, there are many from all over the world. BILA is not only a domestic organisation, it is also the British Chapter of the Association International de Droit des Assurances (AIDA) and is an active participant in its quadrennial world congress.

LECTURE SCRIPTS

We would like to remind members that lecture scripts, handouts and other materials provided for Lectures, the Colloquium and Conferences are now posted in the Members area of the website. If you have difficulties in accessing these please contact us on secretariat@bila.org.uk   

RECOGNITION FOR BILA HON LIFE MEMBER HAROLD CAPLAN

We are delighted to record that Harold Caplan, who was last year made an honorary life member of BILA following his long and active support of BILA - he was described in "BILA - The Early Years" as being "among the many distinguished and specifically practical trained and qualified lawyers" gracing BILA's inaugural meeting held on 25 February 1964 - has received further recognition fromthe European Air Law Association. They have conferred upon him a Lifetime Achievement Award  "in recognition of his work and outstanding contributions to the field of European and international air law".

Insurance Contract Law Reform

Consultation Paper on Insurance Contract Law: Misrepresentation, Non-disclosure and Breach of Warranty by the Insured

Members of the Restatement of the European Insurance Law Project Group presented the public launch of the Restatement of European Insurance Contract Law at BILA's Half Day Conference held on September, 11, 2009. The papers from this presentation together with those presented by the European Group at the BILA Colloquium held on the 24/25 May, 2007 may be found in the Members area. 

The BILA Charitable Trust with the generous support of Lloyd's hosted an event in the Old Library at Lloyd's on the 10 February, 2009. The event entitled "London's future as a centre for effective international insurance dispute resolution" was chaired by the Rt Hon. Sir Anthony Evans QC. The speakers were Ewen Gilmour, CEO Chaucer Syndicates and Deputy Chairman of Lloyd's, Adrian Mecz, partner Chadbourne & Parke LLP, and Ian Hunter QC of Essex Court.
